Search Engine Optimization for Toronto and the World!

Drupal site maps: your hotline to Google

On this blog, I've talked about adding metadata to your Drupal site and tracking your Drupal site with Google analytics. The next step on the way to search engine happiness is to begin spoon-feeding Google all the latest content on your site.

The way to do that is through a sitemap that you register with Google. Right away we have to make a clear distinction between HTML sitemaps and XML sitemaps.

First page Google ranking!

Well, this web site now officially ranks on a Google search - within Canada, at least.

If you Google "toronto seo help", this site ranks third! This is not a bad result, and it gives me something to aim for - knocking off the posers ahead of me. It also gives me some solid basis for improvement - I can analyze these other sites and probe for weaknesses.

Now, if you Google "Toronto SEO", I'm on the 45th page. Well, would we know who Edmund Hillary was if he didn't have Everest to climb?

Nuts and bolts: Drupal meta data

I've added some content to this site, and now I want to make sure that this content is properly structured, tagged, and described in order for it to be found easily by search engines and searchers. This is a pretty good definition of SEO hygiene - the technical tricks and content practices that make your content findable.

In which Pete goes optimizing, and nearly catches a visitor

Have you ever read The House at Pooh Corner, the second in the classic Winnie-the-Pooh books by A. A. Milne? In one story, Pooh and Piglet are out walking when they come across some tracks in the snow. They begin following the tracks, which to their alarm are soon joined by new tracks, and so on, until they suppose they are following a large group of dangerous woozles. Eventually it is revealed that they are walking in circles around a tree, and the tracks are their own.

Google Analytics for Drupal

Analytics are the heart of SEO. As Peter Drucker, Robert Kaplan, and millions of others have said, "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it." For SEO, to say that is almost redundant. (Technically, it would be a tautology. I apologize, but I have 2 degrees in professional writing so these things matter to me.)

What I'm trying to say is that from a certain basic perspective, there is nothing more to SEO than managing the numbers you get from Google. Visits, bounces, average times, segmentation, and so forth - that's all that matters. As you might guess, I have different ideas, but this is not the blog post to get into it. Instead, a quick shakedown on how to get rolling with Google analytics with a Drupal site.

Live Twitter feed widget

I've added a live Twitter feed, which is nice, I suppose. It certainly adds some visual interest to the look of the site. I don't suppose it adds much from an SEO perspective, though - at least not from an SEO hygiene perspective. And of course, I have no control over what happens to drift by, whether it is "great paying #seo #job !" or "omfg ur #seo sux lolz". Also, the search feed goes by fast, and doesn't allow you to back up - you gotta be quick if you see something interesting.

In case you're wondering how I did it, wonder no more.

Drupal Twitter module

I've created a new Twitter account, just for this site, and I have added the Twitter module to this drupal web site. It's pretty nice - now when I create a new blog entry, a new tweet goes out automatically with the title and a link back. That means links back to my site, the opportunity to reach new readers, and all kinds of good things.

The speed of Twitter

Here's an amazing demonstration of the power of Twitter. 21 hours ago, actor, awards show host, former Doogie Houser star and current cultural touchstone Neil Patrick Harris (known as NPH to many) created his first Tweet. http://twitter.com/ActuallyNPH Here are the stats as of a few minutes ago.

5 Following 58,891 Followers 2,029 Listed

So, he's following 5 people, almost 59 thousand are following him already, and over 2 thousand have put him on one of their Twitter lists. That's fairly impressive for 21 hours.

Kick-off blog post, and URLs for good SEO

Greetings!

This is the first post for TorontoSEOhelp.com, and I'm publishing it far sooner than anybody would normally. The site is newly created, I am just using a stock theme, and I haven't even loaded all the modules I need. In short, this site is not ready for prime time.

So why am I blogging? Because I want to do something a little different. When creating a new web site, or reworking an existing site for that matter, there are a thousand little decisions that get made along the way. Most of those decisions are not very interesting to anybody but the webmaster. But some decisions will have a lasting impact. And in particular, some decisions will have a profound impact on the site's search engine optimization, the brand identity I am trying to construct, and the marketing and sales systems I am trying to put in place.
